Description
Since the 1940s Tinker Air Force Base, near Midwest City, Oklahoma, has been a base for strategic bombers and early-warning radar planes and a major aircraft repair facility. Activities at the Base contaminated the underlying Garber-Wellington aquifer with volatile organic compounds, metals, and other compounds to depths exceeding 200 feet below land surface. U.S. Air Force environmental staff and civilian contractors have characterized the extent of contamination in the upper part of the aquifer (IT Corporation, 1999).
