- Description
- The U.S. Geological Survey has produced a new poster describing the recent timeline of Mount St. Helens which has erupted more than any other volcano in the Cascade Range during the past 4,000 years. Eruptions over the past three decades serve as reminders of the powerful geologic forces that are reshaping the landscape of the Pacific Northwest. On May 18, 1980, a massive landslide and catastrophic explosive eruption opened a gaping, north-facing crater. Ash from the eruption fell as far away as western South Dakota. Reconstruction began almost immediately and over the years there have been two new lava domes. The most recent was taller than the Empire State Building in New York City before its collapse in 2005. Although the rate of growth has slowed, lava dome extrusion has continued into early 2008. This poster includes four pictures of Mount St. Helens-- pre-1980, 1980, 2003 and 2007-- along with the timeline of recent activity and informative text.
