Description
Earthquakes and Faults in the San Francisco Bay Area (1970-2003)--This map of the greater San Francisco Bay Area depicts both active and inactive faults and earthquakes with magnitudes of 1.5 to 7.0. Twenty-two earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.0 and greater are indicated on the map and listed chronologically in an accompanying table. The data are compiled from records from 1970 to 2003. The bathymetry was generated from a digital version of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) maps and hydrographic data for San Francisco Bay (NOAA). Elevation data came from the U.S. Geological Survey National Elevation Dataset (1 arc-second). Fault data was reproduced from the California Geological Survey, and Earthquake data came from the Northern California Earthquake catalog. The landsat satellite image was produced from seven Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus scenes. The map may be viewed and digital files downloaded at: http://pubs.usgs.gov/sim/2004/2848/ The map scale is 1:300,000 and the size is 36 x 48 inches.
