Publications Warehouse is a searchable database of nearly 75,000 USGS publications, most of which are viewable online. The Warehouse includes - but is not limited to - Open File Reports, Bulletins, Water Resources Investigations Reports, and Professional Papers. Publications can date back to the founding of USGS in the 1880s. Users can search by keyword, title, author, report number, or publication year(s).

Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a compilation of nearly 2 million officially-recognized US geographic place names. It is a very useful tool for determining the map(s) a feature appears on, as well as its approximate coordinates. GNIS can be queried interactively or the entire database can be freely downloaded. A separate database of 14,000 Antarctic place names is also searchable.

The National Map Seamless Server provides geographic base data for the US. Roads, orthoimagery, topographic maps, land cover, and elevation data is freely downloadable in GIS-compatible formats for user-specified geographic extents.

The National Geologic Map Database is a searchable database of nearly 85,000 maps published by the USGS, state geological surveys, academic institutions, and nonprofit organizations. Users may restrict results by geographic area, scale range, product format, author, and geologic theme. Links to free online versions are often available. The Geolex database, a compilation of 16,000 stratigraphic names, is also searchable.

USGS Library was established in 1879 to build and organize a collection of scientific materials in the earth sciences, the U.S. Geological Survey Library is now the largest library for earth sciences in the world. The library system includes four libraries and is part of the Geographic Information Office of the USGS.

EarthExplorer provides free access to digital aerial photographs, elevation data, line graphs, satellite imagery, and other geospatial data. Coverage extends beyond the US for some datasets and imagery from decades ago is often available.
